Why content matters for your brand, even when nobody is buying today
Most of your market is not ready to buy. Content is how you get remembered by the ones who will be.
At any moment, roughly 5 percent of your potential clients are actively looking for what you do. The other 95 percent are getting on with their year. Content is not a machine for converting the 5 percent. It is how you get into the heads of the 95 percent so that when their situation changes, you are the name they already know.
Memory is the real asset
Buying decisions in professional services almost never start with a search. They start with a name someone already trusts, and the search is used to confirm it. Every useful thing you publish is a small deposit into that memory. Stop publishing and the balance quietly drains away.
What good content actually does
- Shortens sales conversations, because the prospect arrives already knowing how you think.
- Filters out poor fit enquiries before they reach your calendar.
- Gives your team something credible to send, share and reference.
- Builds the evidence base that both search engines and AI assistants use to describe you.
- Makes your pricing easier to defend, because expertise is visible rather than claimed.
The cost of silence
Your competitors are publishing. When a prospect compares three firms, the one with a body of clear, current thinking looks like the safer choice, regardless of who is actually better at the work. Silence does not read as modesty. It reads as absence.
You are not competing for attention with other accountants. You are competing with everything else in your client's inbox. Being useful is the only reliable way through.
How to judge it
Do not measure content the way you measure ads. Look at direction of travel over a quarter: branded search volume, inbound enquiries that mention your content, repeat readers, and how often prospects say 'I have been following you for a while'. That last sentence is what winning sounds like.
